Our Story
The Coalition of Asian American Leaders (CAAL) emerged out of the will of Minnesota’s Asian American community in 2013 when a small group of leaders came together to share their aspirations for creating an organization that would bring leaders from across sectors, generations, and ethnicities together. Throughout 2014, over 300 Asian Minnesotan leaders would come together, hosting multiple conversations using an asset-based approach and human-centered design processes to determine a course of action.
Leaders from across the state collectively affirmed their experiences of exclusion and invisibility, but they had a desire to demonstrate more impactful leadership to make Minnesota work better for all. These leaders created CAAL to be a network that equips and uplifts leaders, develops and takes action on shared agendas, and build across communities towards equity, justice, and prosperity.
Mission
Today, we are a social justice network of leaders with a mission to harness our collective power to improve the lives of community by connecting, learning, and acting together.
Our Values
1. UNITY IS POWER
We believe our diversity is our asset, but unity is our power.
2. CENTER RELATIONSHIPS
We value relationships because they are central to building power with community.
3. LIFT UP THE MOST IMPACTED
We believe our work must always lift up the voices of those most impacted.
4. INCLUSIVE DEMOCRACY
We believe our democracy thrives when all communities are visible, included, and fully engaged in systemic decisions that impact their lives.
5. CONNECT ACROSS SILOS
We believe great ideas can come from anyone, but effective leaders must be connected beyond ethnic, sector, and generational silos to fully realize their ideas for collective good.
6. SOLIDARITY IS ESSENTIAL
We believe we are more powerful together, and solidarity across communities is necessary to advance social justice, and ensure every Minnesotan thrives.
7. IMAGINE THE FUTURE
We believe we must spend time imagining the future we want and work collaboratively and strategically to change the environment so we can get there.
8. BE A VEHICLE FOR CHANGE
While we are a vehicle for collective work, we do not speak for impacted community members.
9. BUILD ON ASSETS
Each leader and each community also has its own unique assets on which our work must build on.
