A Race to Close the Disproportionate COVID-19 Mortality Rates in Minnesota’s Asian Community

2021

The COVID-19 pandemic is negatively and disproportionately impacting Asian Minnesotans who have higher rates of infection and mortality. When data is disaggregated, the Hmong, Karen and Karenni are more impacted than other Asian ethnic groups. This trend is consistent and persistent among various Asian ethnic communities. It brings to light the need for further disaggregated data to better inform targeted strategies to reduce the racial and ethnic COVID-19 disparities.

This report includes 2020 COVID-19 mortality rates within the Minnesota Asian population, discusses social and environmental factors, and explores recommendations on how to close health disparities experienced by unique Asian cultural groups in Minnesota.

Stronger Together: A Survey of Asian Minnesotan Nonprofits
during COVID-19

2020

To better understand the challenges facing this ecosystem of
organizations in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, CAAL conducted a survey throughout the summer of 2020. The data reflects the responses of 18 organizations—about 40% of the Asian Minnesotan organizations in our database—and so should not be taken as a comprehensive analysis, but rather, a window into some of the challenges this community is facing and what opportunities exist to support them through these overlapping health and economic crises.

Power, Politics, and Preservation of Heritage Languages

2020

This paper arose out of a partnership between the Coalition of Asian American Leaders (CAAL) and Education Evolving following a summit
hosted by CAAL in June of 2019. The summit was attended by more than
100 racially and ethnically diverse educators from Minnesota, Wisconsin, and California who came together to discuss how they approach teaching and reclaiming language literacy.

Every Student Succeeds Act Initiative – Policy Brief

2019

By fully supporting multilingualism and educational equity, Minnesota can simultaneously create
short-term education benefits for all students while simultaneously creating longterm workforce and social benefits for the entire state.

The following brief uplifts the Minnesota Multilingual Equity Network’s equity agenda and recommendations to MDE for implementing the Every Student Succeeds Act.

Paths Forward on Education

2015

CAAL engaged over 350 Asian American leaders from across ethnicities, sectors, and age groups to inform our strategic direction. Two work groups dove into the quantitative data and guided key informant interviews to help us understand the nuances within Minnesota’s Asian American population. The community’s voices and collective leadership now set the paths forward on education and economic issues.

State of Asian Minnesotans Briefs

When there is not enough data and information, or stories and lived experiences about a community, generalizations are formed that neither acknowledge the unique assets or unique needs of those communities. This often leads to further invisibility and exclusion.

Given this moment – where Asian Minnesotans have become the fastest growing racial group in the state; are composed of over 40+ ethnic groups whose immigrant paths are varied; and, are facing new and old challenges that stand in the way of true community prosperity – we believe we can and must do more to learn more about the state of the community.

In 2020, we brought research and information, stories and narratives, and posed questions on timely topics so that we could consider how to move forward. Our State of Asian Minnesotans Series sought to deepen our collective understanding of this growing and important population, and pushed us all to consider what building powerful communities that truly help to shape our democracy can look like.
